Longitudinal Clinical Placements

What Is Longitudinal Clinical Placement?

Longitudinal Clinical Placement, or LCP, is a clinical immersion experience for our Phase 1 students. It involves a student coming to your practice setting, learning from you, and directly interacting with patients. LCP is our students’ first official clinical experience within the curriculum. It is an excellent way for them to begin implementing their academic knowledge in a practical setting, while also working on patient interaction skills. They will observe how experienced clinicians such as yourselves operate.

We are always looking for LCP physician preceptors to guide our students in the program.  These physicians should have sufficient exam space for LCP students to work with patients. An ideal LCP preceptor would be an internal medicine, family medicine, or pediatrics practitioner who deals with general complexity patients appropriate for a first year medical student to apply their learned classroom knowledge by independently taking patient histories, completing patient exams and writing case notes. The LCP program runs annually from January through September with each student required to see at least two or more patients per visit. After each visit, one patient note will be written by the student and reviewed by the preceptor. There are a total of ten visits required to complete the program. Please email somfacdev@hmsom.edu for additional information.
