Faculty Awards and Recognitions

We value the efforts of our faculty and offer the awards below in recognition of their achievements. These awards are for mid-career faculty who have demonstrated remarkable contributions to the School of Medicine through outstanding achievements in scholarly research and/or creative endeavors; excellence as a teacher, advisor and mentor; and distinguished participation in the service activities of the university and elsewhere.

Distinguished Phase I Faculty Teaching Award

  • One faculty member yearly who demonstrates excellence in teaching in a Phase I course by engaging students in the subject matter, embracing active learning techniques, teaching performance in active learning, impact on students, support for students and use of innovative teaching methods.
  • Faculty teaching role within either a large group course (MCP, SP, I2C, DH, HA, NMD, NB), a small group course (PPPC, HD, CS), HSS or LCP
  • Cannot be considered if awarded within the prior 5 years


Distinguished Clerkship Faculty Teaching Award

  • Two faculty members yearly who demonstrate excellence in teaching within a Clerkship (IM, Surgery, FM, Peds, OB/GYN, Psych, Neuro, ED) by enhancing students' diagnostic acumen, clinical decision making, focus on social determinants of health, and compassion in care.
  • Cannot be considered if awarded within the prior 5 years


Distinguished Advanced Clinical Faculty Teaching Award

  • Two faculty members yearly from each region who demonstrates excellence in teaching within an elective, critical care or subinternship by enhancing students' diagnostic acumen, clinical decision making, social determinants of health, and compassion in care
  • Faculty member and taught during March 1 in the year prior to award to February 30
  • Cannot be considered if awarded within the prior 5 years

Distinguished Faculty Service Award

  • One faculty member yearly who displays excellence in administrative or curricular service to either 1) a SOM committee (Admissions, Appointment and Promotions (APC), Data Governance (DGC), Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI), Faculty Assembly, Faculty Grievance, Institution Quality & Effectiveness (IQI), Medical Education (MEC), Nominations and Elections (NEC), Research, Student National Medical Association, Student Performance Review (SPRC), Student Professionalism(SPC)), other substantive SOM committee or 2) other major administrative and programmatic contribution (such as academic program development, etc), in which the individual demonstrates leadership, academic commitment, and is courageous, creative, collaborative, compassionate
  • Awardee must have a SOM Faculty appointment and have served for at least one year on a SOM committee.
  • Cannot be considered if awarded within the prior 5 years


Distinguished Senior Faculty Award for Faculty Mentoring

  • Recognition of a senior faculty member (Associate or Full Professor) who has had an impact on junior faculty members' academic career growth and development in the areas of education, clinical care and/or research.
  • Cannot be considered if awarded within the prior 5 years


The Dean Bonita Stanton Humanism Faculty Award

  • A faculty member who has demonstrated humanism consistently throughout their work in our institution and in the world. This award is to honor Dr. Stanton, a lighthouse of compassion and generosity, who founded our school on the basis that doctors need their training rooted in service to humankind. Dean Stanton showed it is possible to care for others while maintaining our showed it is possible to care for others while maintaining our dignity, our compassion, and our humanity.
  • Cannot be considered if awarded previously.


Distinguished Faculty Community Engagement Mentoring Award

  • Recognizes a full-time faculty member at any Rank, whose mentorship of medical student's community engaged medical education work, including scholarly capstone projects and community health work has been outstanding and has led to documented recognition and community impact during their tenure at the SOM.
  • Cannot be considered if awarded within the prior 5 years


Distinguished Faculty Champion of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Award

  • Recognizes a full-time faculty member at any Rank, whose achievements advance and contribute in substantial ways to promoting a climate of inclusion at HMSOM and advancing its education, research and patient care mission. Documented evidence of faculty's outstanding efforts in recruitment of diverse talent of students, residents, faculty and staff; fostering a climate of inclusion for diverse individuals, cultivating diverse teams and actively implementing initiatives to mitigate bias in the working, learning and patient care environment; exemplary scholarship to advance diversity and community engagement and to address health disparities and access to care; exemplary contributions to the success of campus-based outreach efforts; Exemplary service as role model, mentor and sponsor in providing opportunities for growth and leadership of diverse individuals.
  • Cannot be considered if awarded within the prior 5 years

Distinguished Senior Faculty Award for Basic Science Research

  • Award recognizes faculty at the rank of associate and/or full professor, who has held any HMSOM faculty rank for 5 or more years (do not have to all be at senior rank; by March 1 of the award year), and who has achieved a truly exceptional record of creative activities and innovation in basic research, and who demonstrates a record of continuous extraordinary productivity during their tenure at the SOM, and performed outstanding research and achieved a high level of national and international recognition such as documented evidence of exemplary research/creative accomplishments and impact of their work on their discipline as evaluated by peers and experts in their field. Significant national and international recognition in the academic community. The candidates will be judged by the body of their work since the start of their independent academic career, with particular focus on work at the SOM.
  • Cannot be considered if awarded within the prior 5 years


Distinguished Junior Faculty Award for Basic Science Research

  • Award recognizes faculty at the rank of assistant professor, who has held HMSOM faculty rank for 5 or more years (by March 1 of the award year), and who has achieved a truly exceptional record of creative activities and innovation in basic research, and who demonstrates a record of continuous extraordinary productivity during their early tenure at the SOM, and performed outstanding research and has begun to achieve a regional or national recognition. The candidates will be judged by the body of their work since the start of their academic career, with particular focus on work at the SOM.
  • Cannot be considered if awarded within the prior 5 years


Distinguished Senior Faculty Award for Clinical and Translational Research

  • Award recognizes faculty at the rank of associate and/or full professor, who has held any HMSOM faculty rank for 5 or more years (do not have to all be at senior rank; by March 1 of the award year), and who has achieved a truly exceptional record of creative activities and innovation in clinical, quality and/or clinical database research, and who demonstrates a record of continuous extraordinary productivity during their tenure at the SOM, and performed outstanding research and achieved a high level of national and international recognition such as documented evidence of exemplary research/creative accomplishments and impact of their work on their discipline as evaluated by peers and experts in their field. Significant national and international recognition in the academic community. The candidates will be judged by the body of their work since the start of their independent academic career, with particular focus on work at the SOM.
  • Cannot be considered if awarded within the prior 5 years

Distinguished Faculty Medical Education Scholarship Award

  • Award recognizes a faculty member at any rank who has achieved a truly exceptional record of creative activities, innovation and/or research in medical education and who demonstrates a record of continued extraordinary productivity during their tenure at the SOM as evaluated by peers and experts in their field. Significant regional and national recognition in the academic community (published abstracts, papers, presentations, other), with evidence of a positive impact of their mentorship and/or teaching on undergraduate medical students.
  • Provides recognition for faculty who have been SOM faculty for 3 or more years, and who have performed outstanding medical education advancements and achieved a high level of national and international recognition.
  • Cannot be considered if awarded within the prior 5 years


Distinguished Faculty Mentor for Student Research Award

  • Recognizes a full-time faculty member at any Rank, whose mentorship of medical student research (biomedical science and/or medical educational scholarly work) has led to student accomplishments (papers, presentations, abstracts) produced during their tenure at the SOM, have been outstanding. Evidence of a positive impact of their mentorship and/or teaching on undergraduate medical students.
  • Cannot be considered if awarded within the prior 5 years
