Academic Support
The primary goal of Academic Support is to help students achieve their full academic potential in medical school. Towards this end, we offer the following resources and programs to support student academic success.
Our Medical Education Learning Specialists work closely with medical students to provide personalized guidance on various aspects of their academic journey. We offer one-on-one consultations to address individual learning needs.
Some examples include:
- Discussing active learning strategies for long-term retention, time management, knowledge organization, problem-solving, and testing skills/preparation.
- Reviewing difficult content and drawing connections between concepts.
- Tailoring HMSOM resources to meet individual student needs.
- Creating individualized and comprehensive study plans for high stakes summative exams such as NBME shelf, USMLE Step 1 and Step 2 CK.
- Discussing strategies that support transition into the relatively unstructured but demanding clinical setting.
The Academic Support Peer Tutoring program is designed to help medical students actively engage with the course material, and prepare for exams. Our peer tutors are upper-level students who have demonstrated proficiency in the courses they are tutoring.
Through the Peer Tutor Program, Phase 1 students can participate in weekly small group tutoring sessions. Individual peer tutoring sessions can also be available for Phase 1 and Phase 2 students.
The Medical Education Learning Specialists also offer regular workshops and presentations on developing various cognitive and metacognitive study skills important for success in medical school.
